Emissiereductie-eenheden in the Netherlands (ERE's)

The energy transition is changing faster than ever. Electric driving is growing rapidly, legislation is evolving, and new systems are emerging to encourage sustainability. One of these developments is the introduction of Emission Reduction Units (EREs).

Since January 1, 2026, this scheme has been in force in the Netherlands, based on the European RED III Directive (Renewable Energy Directive III). This creates a new mechanism that does something interesting: it directly links the growth of electric driving to a financial return for those who drive sustainably. Maxem's Role

Although the principle sounds simple, there is a considerable amount of administration and certification behind the scenes regarding the registration of emission reduction units. Data must be validated, charging volumes must be registered, and certificates must be issued and sold correctly. This is where the role of a knowledge partner comes into play.

At Maxem, we have been working with similar systems regarding HBE certificates for sustainable energy for years. Based on that experience, we make the necessary technical charging data available to our specialized booking partner, who subsequently handles the registration and certification process with the Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa). Specifically, Maxem provides:

  • Making the raw charging data and kWh readings of connected charging points available
  • Facilitating the connection through which data is securely transferred to the booking partner
  • Maintaining and storing the administrative history of charging sessions

No administrative burden for you. Is your charging station connected to Maxem’s CPMS? Then you don’t have to do anything yourself. The charging data is automatically forwarded from our system to our booking partner. No manual exports, no separate registrations – the EREs are simply redeemed for you. Please note that bookkeeping agency may deduct a percentage of the revenue as a service fee.

The goal is simple: to ensure that, as a charging station owner, you not only drive sustainably but also actually benefit from the value you create.

Requirement: Your charging station must have a MID meter

A MID meter (Measuring Instruments Directive) is required for ERE certificates to officially and accurately demonstrate how much electricity has been charged into your electric car. This measurement is mandatory in order to qualify for financial reimbursement (refund per kWh). MID meters are officially certified according to European standards. A MID meter guarantees the government the accuracy of billing, which is a legal requirement when passing on charging costs.

Why a MID meter?

  • Accuracy & Reliability: The meter has been independently tested and meets European requirements for billing.

  • Legal requirement: Without a MID-certified meter in the charging station, no EREs can be granted.

  • Verification: The Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) only accepts these measurements as proof.

  • Billing: It enables correct registration of charging costs and proper tax reporting.

My charging station does not have a MID meter:

Internal meter required: A separate smart meter in your meter cupboard does not count for ERE. The MID meter must be integrated into the charger itself. If your charging station does not have a built-in MID meter, you cannot directly apply for ERE certificates (Emission Reduction Units).

What now?

  • Check: To be sure, check the technical documentation of your charging station. Sometimes a small MID meter is built in but not immediately visible.

  • Upgrade/Replace: If your charging station indeed does not have a MID meter, it must be upgraded or replaced with a model that does in order to qualify for the annual ERE reimbursement.

You can check the manufacturer’s website or the manual of your charging station to see if it has a MID logo or certification.
