[PV Inverters](https://support.maxem.io/integrated-hardware?hsLang=en#pv-inverters) October 8, 2026 # How do I configure an SMA inverter for communication with the Maxem Energy Controller? ## Follow the steps below to correctly connect the SMA inverter to the Maxem Energy Controller and verify that it is online and generating power. ##### **Introduction** This article explains how to configure an SMA inverter with Maxem’s Energy Controller. ##### **Preparation** A smooth installation requires proper preparation. Before configuring the SMA inverter, both the inverter and Maxem’s Energy Controller must be successfully installed to ensure proper communication between the inverter and the controller. ##### **Configuration steps** ###### Step 1:  Enable Modbus TCP on the SMA inverter In the installation wizard of the SMA inverter, navigate to **Network Configuration:** 1. 1. Go to **Communication Type: Modbus** 2. Set **Modbus Active** to **Yes** 3. Set **Port** to **502** 4. Set **Unit ID** to **3** 5. Set **Modbus SunSpec Profile Version** to **Standard** ###### Step 2: Configure the correct Ethernet settings for the SMA inverter In the installation wizard of the SMA inverter, navigate to **Network Configuration** 1. 1. Go to **Communication Type: Ethernet** 2. Set **Automatic Configuration Enabled** to **No** 3. Set **IP Address (SMA inverter)** to **192.168.25.2** 4. Set **Gateway IP (Maxem Energy Controller)** to **192.168.25.1** 5. Set **Subnet Mask** to **255.255.255.0** 6. Set **DNS Server IP** to **8.8.8.8** 7. Complete the configuration (note that the SMA inverter may need to be restarted at the end in order to apply these settings). ###### Step 3: Verify inverter status in Sunny Portal After updating the network settings, check in **Sunny Portal** whether the SMA inverter is **online** and **generating power**. If the inverter does not appear online immediately, it may need to be **restarted** for the new settings to take effect.
