[Maxem Energy Controller](https://support.maxem.io/products-services?hsLang=en#maxem-energy-controller) October 20, 2026 # How do I configure a SMA Data Manager EDMM-20 for communication with the Maxem Energy Controller? ## Follow the steps below to correctly connect the SMA Data Manager to the Maxem Energy Controller and verify that it is online and generating power. ##### **Introduction** This article explains how to configure a **SMA Data Manager EDMM-20** with the **Maxem Energy Controller**. ##### **Preparation** A smooth installation requires proper preparation. Before configuring the SMA Data Manager EDMM-20, both the data manager and Maxem’s Energy Controller must be successfully installed to ensure proper communication between the data manager and the controller. ##### **Configuration steps** ###### Step 1: Navigate to SMA's Sunny Portal 1. Open the SMA Data Manager web UI using its IP address. 2. Log in with an **Installer account**. 3. In the top bar, use **Select System** to select the right location from the list. 4. In the top bar, use **Select Device** to select the right data manager from the list.   ###### Step 2: Configure the static IP address for the data manager 1. In the (left) sidebar, go to **Configuration → Network configuration**. 2. Click on the **Ethernet** section to configure the right settings. 3. Make sure **Disconnect networks** is turned **OFF**. 4. Make sure **Automatic IP assignment via DHCP server** is turned **OFF**. 5. Fill in the designated static IP address **192.168.25.XX** in the **IP address** field. 6. Fill in **255.255.255.0** in the **Subnet mask** field. 7. Fill in **192.168.25.1** in the **Gateway IP** field. 8. Fill in **8.8.8.8** in the **DNS server IP** field. 9. Press **Save** to save these settings.   ###### Step 3: Enable Modbus TCP on the SMA data manager 1. In the (left) sidebar, go to **Configuration → External communication**. 2. Under **Modbus server**, select **Carry out initial configuration**. 3. Enable **Modbus server**. 4. Verify that the port is set to **502**. 5. The field under **assignment of unit ID** can be left empty. ###### Step 4: Open Grid management service 1. In the top bar, click on the **Home**icon. 2. In the (left) sidebar, go to **Configuration → Grid management service**. 3. Choose **Configuration & activation** for **Active Power**.   ###### Step 5: Configure Active Power control In the **Active Power** wizard, verify and set the following options: 1. Check **Total system power** is set correctly for the PV installation. 2. Make sure **Optimized regulation/control mode** is **unchecked**. 3. Select **Open loop control**. 4. Leave all **Signal sources** unchecked. 5. Enable **Direct selling interface**. 6. Select **Standard Modbus interface**. 7. Set **Setting time** to **1**. 8. Set **Active power gradient** to **100**. 9. Press **Save**.   ###### Step 6: Verify external active power parameters 1. In the (left) sidebar, go to **Configuration → Parameter**. 2. Under **Filter**, enter **External active power**. 3. Verify the following parameter statuses: 1. External active power setpoint via Modbus (direct seller) → **ON** 2. External active power setpoint via Modbus \*electric utility company) **→ OFF** 3. External active power setpoint **→ ON** 4. External active power setpoint **→ OFF** If you change any values, press **Save** at the bottom of the page. ##### **Testing** After configuration, Maxem can verify whether the energy controller successfully communicates with the SMA Data Manager EDMM-20. If no successful communication has been established between the SMA Data Mamnager EDMM-20 and the Maxem Energy Controller, and the data mangerer does not appear online in SMA Sunny Portal via the Energy Controller, please repeat the steps from Configuration Steps.
